CNC Lathe
Design & Manufacturing of a CNC lathe with 50-micron repeatability.

Course: 2.72 Elements of Mechanical Design
Team Name: Chuck Key Cheese
In this course, we worked in teams of 5 to design and manufacture a working precision lathe. This involved modeling of the statics, dynamics, thermal expansion, and fatigue of the system.

Below is one example of bending moment modeling I performed to determine the optimal shape of our spindle.

I also led the design and manufacturing of our "Dancing Queen" Flexure, which constrained our lead screw while limiting friction and keeping torque within spec. This involved creating a parametric design and running lots of FEA to determine resulting stiffnesses in each direction.
